John James Audubon was an ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. His major work, The Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1839, was an extensive study documenting all types of American birds in their natural habitats. This image was a collage created by Lady Hertford, who owned Temple Newsam House in Leeds, England by cutting images from Audubon’s book and applying them to hand-painted Chinese wallpaper in her drawing room.

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes and ships and sealing-wax,
Of cabbages and kings
And why the sea is boiling hot
And whether pigs have wings.”
