Fiona Grant reviews a dark and haunting new novel by Jodie Matthews, now in paperback.
A strangely enthralling read; wonderfully descriptive language tells a story, set in a Cornish landscape of moors and small towns, of love and grief and motherhood, but always with an edge of something darker, something unknown, otherworldly. Jodie Mathews knits together the strands of modern life with an older story, older knowledge, older landscapes, in both a disturbing yet beguiling and somehow oddly reassuring way.
I enjoyed this but it was odd. Left me feeling a bit uneasy, (but that was just the description of her breast bone popping as she buried herself in the earth …!) Loved the use of language, pleasurable to read.
