A book and a bench

There’s a glimpse of summer on the horizon and a couple of bank holidays to celebrate. If you fancy losing yourself in a good book for a while come in for a chat. We’ve been reading some belting novels recently and would be happy to recommend some therapeutic escapism.

Counting down the days

Counting down the days… If you’d prefer the non-chocolate variety of Advent calendar we have plenty to choose from.  There’s snow, lots of snow, the Nativity, wildlife, even a treehouse.

Christmas has Landed!

Our Christmas catalogue has arrived – which means the countdown has officially begun!

The life of a local heroine, Madge Addy

July saw the publication of Chris Hall’s biography of Madge Addy. Madge lived just around the corner from the shop. We would like to think that she bought her sweets here long before we opened the bookshop. To coincide with Chorlton Book Festival we were delighted to be loaned nursing memorabilia and wartime artefacts including […]

I Wanna Be Yours

John Cooper Clarke’s autobiography was always likely to be a vivid, engrossing read, but I Wanna Be Yours, out now in hardback, manages to exceed expectations. Everyone’s favourite spiky-haired performance poet conjures up a bygone age growing up around post-war, pre-punk Salford, and he’s unfailingly candid about his subsequent hazy days of fame and addiction. We […]

What Girls do in the Dark

Writer / performer Rosie Garland is a long-standing friend of the shop, and we’re always delighted to receive her latest book. Rosie’s new volume of poetry for Nine Arches Press, What Girls Do in the Dark, is a luscious, wide-ranging collection that demonstrates her spellbinding gift with words, whether considering her birth parents, a bramble bush […]
